Burst Pipe or Leaking Tank

When water pours through the ceiling, it is probably coming from a burst pipe

If water pours through the ceiling:

turn off main valve 1. Close the main shutoff valve. It is usually in the basement near the water meter, or on the supply pipe from the well in a well system.
turn on faucet on lowest level 2. Open a faucet in the lowest part of the house to drain the water from the pipes. When the water stops flowing from the faucet, the flow from the leak will have stopped also.
close breaker of any circuit in contact with water 3. If water is running down a light fixture, switch off the light and cut the power to that circuit by tripping a breaker or removing a fuse at the main control panel or fuse box.
- DO NOT TURN THE CIRCUIT BACK ON UNTIL IT HAS BEEN CHECKED BY AN ELECTRICIAN.
make hole in ceiling to release trapped water 4. If the ceiling plaster is bulging, put a large bowl or bucket beneath the bulge and pierce the plaster with a screwdriver or chisel. Stand out of the way, and have spare buckets ready. This will limit damage to your ceiling to one area. Call a plumber as soon as these four steps are completed
